Iwao means a large craggy rock. The appearance of these large rocks being exposed to rain and wind and having their surfaces scratched or chipped seems to to indicate the harshness of the natural world. The vase "Iwao" conveys the strength of a small flower that lives strong and firmly rooted in such a rock.
The black color of the vase is created using a method called "iron glaze" (iron black glaze). This is a method that causes a coloring reaction with the iron oxide contained in the glaze, and is one of the typical glazing methods for Seto ware. The rough texture of the surface and the calm, quiet black color give it a somewhat "Iwao" atmosphere.
